It is important for the execution of special transport in Denmark to determine whether a permit is required, and this is a frequent question in discussions about special transport.
This is stated relatively clearly in section 14 of the Executive Order on Special Transport. The full text of the order can be read at Retsinformation.dk.
If a transport is wider than 3,30 m or higher than 4,0 m, a permit is required. So far, so good.
If the transport is longer than 30,0 m, a permit is required. However, this limit presupposes that all axles on the trailer (except possibly the front axle) are forcibly steered. If not, a permit is required when the total length exceeds 22,0 m.
Mobile cranes always require a special transport permit. However, there are exceptions in section 35 regarding driving without a permit in closed areas, such as ports.
Transport with a loaded heavy-loader always requires a permit. Driving with an empty heavy-loader also requires a permit if its dimensions exceed the limits in the dimension regulations, i.e. 16,5 m long, 2,55 m wide, and 4,0 m high.
